PIP Implants

Women concerned about PIP implants can find the latest information on the NHS choices website here: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Breast-implants/Pages/PIP-introduction.aspx

PIP implants first raised concern in December 2011 when widespread media coverage described that they contained industrial grade silicone and not medical grade filler.

Extensive research has been done and confirmed that they do not increase the risk of cancer, but they have been found to have higher rates of complications including rupture and leakage.

Women can find out if they have received PIP implants by contacting their GP, and discussing if removal is the right choice for them. If they decide they want the implant to be removed, this can be done under the NHS for free if the original operation was on the NHS. If the original operation was done privately, patients should seek the advice of the private clinic – they may be removed for free. If the private clinic no longer exists or refuses to remove them, the implants can be removed for free on the NHS if your doctor agrees there is a medical need for it.
